The Sierra Leone Grammar School was founded on March 25th, 1845, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, by the Anglican Church Missionary Society (CMS) of England. It has the distinction of being the oldest secondary school on the west coast of Africa. Over its 162 year history, it has served as a training ground for many of the pre- and post- independence leaders in West Africa. It counts among its alumni many church leaders, governors, judges, lawyers, medical doctors, engineers, educators, accountants, civil servants, etc.

From 1961 when Sierra Leone won its independence from Britain, the school was run by the government of Sierra Leone under an agreement with the Anglican Diocesan Bishop of Freetown and was renamed accordingly, the SLGS. Essentially, teachers’ salaries were paid by the government, but other expenses were the responsibility of the school. The school moved to its current location on the western side of Freetown in the village of Murray Town in 1962, occupying an area of approximately 10 acres. The buildings and land are owned by the Anglican diocese. In September 2007, by request of the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee of the Old Boys Union, the government of Sierra Leone relinquished its management of the school.

All current students and alumni are fondly referred to as “Regentonians”, in reference to the school’s original location at Regent Square in Freetown. The alumni association is keenly aware of the enormous responsibility it has undertaken to assist with the management of the school. It is with this sense of commitment that I write to urge you to support our endeavors to make sure we continue to produce the caliber of graduates who will continue to contribute hugely in all levels of leadership as their predecessors.

As a Regentonian, or someone who appreciates what we try to do, we ask for your support so the school can continue to “Live forever, sunder never” and remain forever, “Regentonians true.”.
